How to Change Your iPhone Keyboard Sound to a Mechanical Keyboard Click

2026.11.044 min read

The iPhone keyboard only has one click and you can’t change it. Here’s how to get clicky, thocky or silent mechanical keyboard sounds instead, and what to check if you hear nothing.

The iPhone keyboard makes one sound, a soft tick. You can turn it on or off in Settings, Sounds & Haptics, Keyboard Feedback, but there’s no way to change it. If you want typing to sound like a mechanical keyboard, you need a keyboard app that brings its own sounds.

Keypop has 17 typing sounds and they’re all free. Pressing a key, releasing it, the space bar and delete each have their own sound, which makes it feel a lot less repetitive than a single click.

What the sounds are like

If you’ve used a mechanical keyboard you’ve probably heard of blue, brown and red switches. Keypop’s sounds take inspiration from those. They aren’t recordings of real switches, but the names give you a decent idea of what to expect.

For an office or a library, Silent Red is the safe pick. If you want something fun, try Bubble Pop or Water Drop. One of the typewriter sounds even plays a carriage return when you hit space.

How to change it

Open your keyboard in the Make tab and go to the last step, Sound. Tap a sound to hear it. When you find one you like, tap Save and the keyboard starts using it right away. If you only want to turn sound or vibration off, you can do that separately in Settings.

If there’s no sound

Most of the time it’s silent mode. Keypop follows silent mode like any other app, so flip the side switch or use the Action button. If you just updated the app, go to Settings, Keypop, Keyboards and turn Allow Full Access off and on again. And if you get sound but no vibration, Allow Full Access is probably off.

Typing won’t pause your music or video. The key sounds just play on top of it.

Pairing the sound with the look makes a surprising difference: wood sounds with wood colored keys, bubble pops with round keys. See make your own keycap keyboard for the design side, or the setup guide if you’re just getting started.
